Police Interview Condit's Wife

WASHINGTON - Law enforcement officials Thursday interviewed Carolyn Condit, the wife of Rep. Gary Condit, D-Calif., about the disappearance of 24-year-old Washington intern Chandra Levy.

The interview caused Condit to miss Independence Day celebrations in his hometown of Modesto, Calif., as the lawmaker continued to help officials in their investigation, according to a statement released by Condit's attorney Abbe D. Lowell.

"Today, the congressman's wife, Carolyn, met with law enforcement officials to provide whatever information she could," Lowell said in a two-page statement.

"To expedite this, Congressman Condit accompanied Mrs. Condit to the Washington area in order to facilitate her meeting with investigators and consequently was unable to participate in the traditional Fourth of July events in Modesto."

The statement also appeals to the media to avoid a "frenzy" over the story and to stop digging around in "private family matters."

"None of these matters pertain to Ms. Levy's disappearance or the ability of law enforcement to determine what has happened to her," Lowell said.

Condit Tuesday denied allegations that his lawyers had asked an alleged former girlfriend, flight attendant Anne Marie Smith, to deny an affair in a legal document. Smith made the allegations of the affair and the document in an interview with Fox News.

The congressman has faced tough scrutiny for divulging few details about what he knows about the case. Lowell said Condit simply did not want to jeopardize the investigation.

"It is clear from a review of other similar cases that broad and detailed dissemination of confidential police interviews can seriously compromise police investigations," he said.

But the statement also said that Condit has hired Marina Ein, a public relations expert, to improve relations with the media.
