Condit Aide Denies Cover-up

A top aide to Rep. Gary Condit on Thursday contradicted a report he told a former colleague to lie to the FBI about her affair with the California Democrat.

USA Today on Wednesday quoted former Condit staffer Joleen McKay as saying that Mike Dayton, the congressman's senior staffer in Washington, had urged her to "leave it in the past or it will ruin you."

McKay, 29, told the FBI she had an affair with Condit in 1994, ABC News reported Thursday.

Dayton told ABC he had never asked any woman to lie to police and the FBI. "Absolutely not."

McKay is the second woman saying she was pressured to conceal adultery with Condit. San Francisco stewardess Anne Marie Smith also has told investigators that Condit aides wanted her to sign a false affidavit denying an affair with him.

Dayton knew McKay from high school, introduced her to Condit and often drove them around Modesto, another former Condit aide told ABC.

The Modesto Bee reported that Dayton and his superior, Condit chief of staff Mike Lynch, have hired top criminal defense attorneys.

Meanwhile, Condit has reportedly agreed to meet for a fourth time with investigators searching for missing former intern Chandra Levy, with whom he also had an extramarital affair.
