A senior aide to Rep. Gary Condit admits that two of the congressman's longtime staff members appear to be key figures in a federal obstruction-of-justice investigation that began after the disappearance of Chandra Levy.
Michael Dayton, Condit's administrative assistant in Washington, and Michael Lynch, who works in the California Democrat's office in Modesto, have been the focus of questions prosecutors have posed to Condit's staff, said the aide, USA Today reported Wednesday.
Prosecutors began the probe after Anne Marie Smith, a San Francisco stewardess who says she had an affair with Condit, said he urged her to sign a false affidavit disavowing the affair.
The married Condit had told authorities that he was merely friends with Levy but later admitted he had an affair. Washington police claim it is unclear whether Condit's lie hurt the search for her.
Law enforcement sources say authorities are looking into whether Condit tried to obstruct the Levy investigation by removing a wristwatch box from his apartment before police searched it July 10, USA Today reported. The box was traced to a Tag Hauer watch given to Condit by a San Francisco woman who was on his staff during the mid-1990s.
