Tax Refund Check Is in the Mail

KANSAS CITY, Mo. - Vice President Cheney and Treasury Secretary Paul O'Neill visited the Treasury Department's Financial Management Service's facility Friday, as the first advance tax rebate payments were mailed to taxpayers.

Eight million checks are being mailed Friday, delivering $3.3 billion in immediate tax relief to American taxpayers.

"The check is in the mail, thanks to the president's leadership in passing tax relief," said O'Neill. "We're getting money back to the taxpayers in record time because the president focused on the tax relief package during his first months in office."

O'Neill said working Americans across the nation would receive $38 billion dollars back from Washington by the end of September.

The Treasury Department was to announce the number of checks to be mailed each week as well as the amount of tax relief being sent to taxpayers. Checks were to be mailed over a 10-week period, following a pattern in which the last two digits of the taxpayer's Social Security number were to determine when the checks were mailed. Those with low numbers get theirs first.

The Internal Revenue Service had mailed notices informing taxpayers of the amount of their check and when to expect it.

Single taxpayers were expected to get up to $300, a head of household up to $500, and married couples who filed jointly up to $600.
