Rep. Barr Wants Condit Investigated

WASHINGTON - Rep. Bob Barr, R-Ga., on Friday called for a House committee to investigate the actions of Rep. Gary Condit, D-Calif., in the disappearance of Chandra Levy.
Most House and Senate members have been silent about the matter, but Barr, who Thursday called on Condit to resign, said evidence suggested he obstructed justice. "In light of the mounting, and already substantial, evidence that a member of the United States House of Representatives ... has obstructed a law enforcement investigation, and otherwise engaged in behavior in violation of the rules of the House, I request the Committee on Standards of Official Conduct begin an inquiry into this matter," Barr said in a statement.
"As always, I am certain the committee would not take any action that would impede or interfere with the law enforcement investigation."
Barr said that Friday's statement by Condit attorney Abbe Lowell that a privately administered lie-detector test exonerated Condit of any wrongdoing in Levy's disappearance should not obscure his overall lack of cooperation with investigators.
"For all his self-serving lie-detector tests, now and whatever else his lawyer spins in his favor, it will not erase the fact he misled and misled badly the lawful conduct of a police investigation," Barr said.
Condit, through his staff, had denied any romantic relationship with Levy, who has been missing since April 30. But published reports quote police as saying that in a third interview with investigators, he admitted to an affair with the 24-year-old former intern with the Federal Bureau of Prisons.
The admission by Condit has not diminished, at least for now, the public support of House Democrat Leader Dick Gephardt of Missouri, who said that members should hold off on making judgments until more facts become clear.
"I think it's inappropriate to draw judgments and make conclusions on what may or may not be the facts," he said. "I think all of that will come in an appropriate time."
