Police Search Condit's Apartment

WASHINGTON – Police left the apartment of Rep. Gary Condit, D-Calif., early Wednesday after searching for more than three hours for clues in the disappearance of intern Chandra Levy.

Police officers and lab experts left Condit's Adams Mill Road apartment in the capital's Adams Morgan neighborhood around 2:40 a.m. EDT. They took some personal items from the apartment, but did not disclose what they had collected.

Police say they also want Condit to take a lie detector test and submit a DNA sample.

Six police officers in two cars arrived at Condit's apartment around 11:45 p.m. EDT. Lab technicians followed. The officers entered the apartment through the building's front and back doors.

Condit, driven to his apartment by one of his staffers three hours before the police arrived, refused to answer any questions from reporters waiting outside. He was in his apartment during the search.

Policemen were seen taking pictures from different angles inside his top-floor apartment in a mid-rise building facing the main road.

It was in this apartment that Levy's aunt Linda Zamsky says the 24-year-old intern used to meet Condit, a 53-year-old married father of two.

Experts said police were not looking for any specific items, but they said that objects like hair, blood, body fluid and other personal belongings could help police in their search for Levy.

Police reiterated that Condit is not a suspect in Levy's disappearance.

Condit invited police to examine his home and phone records, Chief Charles Ramsey said.

"Since the offer was so generously made, we want to make sure we take advantage of that," Ramsey said, adding that he hoped the move would bring some "finality" to at least some aspects of the case.

He said he felt for Levy's parents. Levy has been missing for more than 10 weeks.

"The Levys are suffering a great deal now," said Ramsey.

Levy's mother urged Condit Monday to share the truth with them after the congressman reportedly admitted to an affair with her daughter. Condit told police Friday he had a sexual relationship with Levy, police sources said. It was the third time police had questioned Condit and aides had, until then, vehemently denied a sexual relationship between Condit and Levy.
