Condit Agrees to Face Lie Detector

WASHINGTON - Rep. Gary Condit, D-Calif., will submit to a lie detector test, his office and the attorney for the family of missing intern Chandra Levy said Tuesday.

Metropolitan Police Chief Charles Ramsey said he would also accept Condit's offer to provide a DNA sample and allow a search of his apartment. Levy family attorney Ted Williams welcomed the announcement.

D.C. police entered Condit's apartment late Tuesday, and WUSA television is reporting that a search is taking place, CNN reported late Tuesday night.

The police chief said he was merely accepting an offer of cooperation made by Condit lawyer Abbe Lowell.

"An offer has been made, and it would be irresponsible of us not to take advantage of it," Ramsey said, when asked why police finally were stepping up their contacts with Condit.

Some Republicans wonder if the D.C. police are dragging their feet because Condit is a Democrat. They doubt a Republican would be treated likewise in such circumstances.

Ramsey said he hoped the move would bring "finality" to at least some aspects of the case.

Polygraph results are rarely admissible in court. Ramsey said he understood that the machines have their limits. "But it is a good investigative tool and one we won't hesitate to use."

He said he felt for Levy's parents. Chandra Levy has been missing for more than 10 weeks.

"The Levys are suffering a great deal now," said Ramsey.

Levy's mother, Susan, on Monday urged Condit to share the truth with them after he reportedly admitted to an affair with her daughter.

Mrs. Levy told reporters outside her home in Modesto, Calif., that she wanted Condit to "come out with the truth" and tell her whatever else he might be hiding.

Condit, 53, a married father of two, told police Friday that he had a sexual relationship with Levy, 24, police sources said. It was the third time police had questioned Condit. Aides had, until then, vehemently denied a sexual relationship between Condit and Levy.

Condit told Levy's mother last month that her daughter was only a friend and that they were not romantically involved.

United Airlines flight attendant Anne Marie Smith came out and said she and Condit had an affair that lasted until shortly after Levy's disappearance.

Ramsey said police have received some helpful information that has moved the investigation along, he said but nothing has led to Miss Levy.
