Senate's New Democrat Leaders Have Sordid Pasts

The new Democrat control of the U.S. Senate puts "individuals with poor
ethical and legal records" in charge of powerful committees, warns Judicial Watch, the anti-corruption law firm.
Supporters of President Bush worry that his agenda will suffer now that Sen. Jim Jeffords of Vermont has left the GOP. The new Senate leadership is sure to hinder Bush's plans.
Among those cited by Judicial Watch:
Sen. Tom Daschle of South Dakota, soon to be majority leader, "took illegal campaign contributions from John Huang."
Sen. Edward Kennedy, who will be chairman of the Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee, "also
took illegal campaign contributions from John Huang
and his accomplices." The scandal-plagued Kennedy, of course, is most notorious for driving Mary Jo Kopechne off a bridge at Chappaquiddick Island to a watery grave, yet is repeatedly re-elected by leftist-dominated Massachusetts.
Sen. Chris Dodd of Connecticut, who will be chairman of the Rules and
Administration Committee, was chairman of the
Democratic National Committee and "one of the
masterminds of the Chinagate scandal."
Sen. Carl
Levin of Michigan, who will head the Armed Services Committee,
"also is implicated in the Chinagate scandal, he too
having taken illegal money from John Huang."
Sen. John Kerry of Massachusetts, who will lead the Small Business
Committee, "took illegal campaign contributions from
Judicial Watch client and Chinagate figure Johnny
Chung. (Chung has made amends by telling the truth
about the scandal.)"
Sen. Joseph Biden of Delaware, who will
be chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, was driven from the race for the 1988 Democrat presidential nomination after it was revealed he had
committed plagiarism.
Sen. Patrick Leahy of Vermont, whose imminent control of the Judiciary
Committee worries those who believe judges should not invent legislation from the bench, "is not known for his honesty."
"The ethical and legal standards of the incoming class
of Democrat Senate leaders and chairmen are
exceedingly low," stated Judicial Watch Chairman
and General Counsel Larry Klayman. "They will have to be 'watched'
closely by Judicial Watch to ensure that the will of
the American people and the rule of law is not
subverted and harmed."
