CNSNews.com -- Roll Call, the newspaper covering Capitol Hill, reports that "beleaguered" Republican leaders in California are mentioning National Security Adviser Condoleezza Rice as a possible 2004 challenger to Sen. Barbara Boxer, a liberal Democrat.
"Hollywood couldn't come up with a candidate as good as she is," the newspaper quoted state GOP Chairman Shawn Steele as saying of Rice. "She's emerging as the most popular and most admired woman in America right now."
Roll Call said many California Republicans view Rice as a "possible antidote to their recent inability to attract large numbers of minority and moderate votes."
Rice, the former provost of Stanford University, recently brushed aside suggestions that she might consider running for governor of California. A National Security Council spokeswoman said Rice "loves her home state, but she's very happy with the job she's doing now, and she has no plans to run for state office.
