White History Month Canceled
CNSNews.com
Saturday, May 12, 2001
Virginia Gov. Jim Gilmore has revoked a proclamation declaring May "European Heritage and History Month" after learning that a white separatist group had made the request.

Staffers in the governor's office apparently did not realize that National Organization for European American Rights is headed by former Ku Klux Klansman David Duke.

According to Gilmore, "David Duke's group masquerades as an advocacy group for diversity but preaches white supremacy and a dogma of exclusion and hatred."

The president of the group's Virginia chapter, Ron Doggett, is quoted as saying he feels betrayed because "European-Americans are the only racial group that votes Republican."

Gilmore, a Republican, said he'll be more careful in the future about making proclamations honoring particular groups.
