Dissident Warns America: Stop Helping China
Wes Vernon
Thursday, April 5, 2001
WASHINGTON – Chinese dissident Harry Wu says the crisis involving the U.S. Navy plane that made an emergency landing in China should be a lesson to America: Stop helping them.

President Bush has done well in the confrontation so far, Wu told NewsMax.com in a phone interview from Salt Lake City, where he was between planes after a speaking engagement in Montana.

"So far, so good," he said. "He should not apologize."

Wu, who was incarcerated twice by the Chinese, once from 1960 to 1979 for speaking out against the bloody 1956 invasion of Hungary, and again for 66 days in 1995, declared, "It is time to get off the Clinton engagement policy."

In answer to a question, he said, "Of course, China is preparing for war with the United States."

The dissident scholar, now an American citizen, said U.S. businesses that are no doubt pressuring the president and Congress not to disrupt the friendly trade policies with Beijing should realize "this is a security issue," not just an economic one.

He expressed a belief that the crisis "will be solved very soon."

"China needs that trade with the U.S.," Wu opined, adding the Chinese need the economic advantage our trade gives them so they can turn around and boost their military strength. He estimated China would need "two or three years" to reach desired military power.

Bush, he believes, should show diplomatic strength. Wu said he expects the 24 American airmen and women to return soon.

Perhaps China will pressure Bush to limit military help to Taiwan. But he said the president should not back down.

The bottom line, the dissident said, is that the two sides have "no will to confront each other."
