China Plans May Day Cyberwar Against U.S.

Mayday, Mayday! China has declared cyberwar against the U.S. and warns it will launch a series of hacker attacks on American Web sites starting May First.

Beijing is spreading the word about what the Chinese are calling the "May Day war," to begin Tuesday, on May Day – the official Communist holiday once celebrated with great pomp and ceremony in Moscow – and last until May 8.

According to the South China Morning Post, the so-called "sixth online national defense war" will be China’s answer to hacker attacks on their Web sites launched by Americans since the EP-3 Navy plane incident.

21cnn.com.cn, Beijing’s official Web site, declared Chinese hackers to be "fearless" and "confident they could hit their targets," the Post reports, adding that the Web site's writer Xia Tong said Chinese hackers were doing good work "combining intelligence with patriotism."

The Post also reports that another Web site, Chinabyte.com, says that Chinese hackers are "embodiments of the Internet spirit," claiming they are experts in computer science and not merely amateurs playing with hacker software.

The May Day attack would be the second launched by Chinese hackers against U.S. Web sites, the Post reports. The first came on the heels of the U.S. bombing of the Chinese Embassy in Belgrade in May 1999.

Hacking by U.S. and Chinese computer geeks began in the aftermath of the collision between the EP-3 plane and a Chinese jet. Chinese hackers invaded one U.S. site and renamed it "Hacker Union of China" and left China's national anthem playing.
