We Do Not Need More Sleaze in D.C.!

General Colin Powell has named Richard Armitage to the key position as his deputy secretary of state.
Mr. Armitage served in the Pentagon back in the 1980s and, in the process, caused so many problems that by 1989 he twice had to withdraw his name from consideration for high-ranking positions in the first Bush administration.
Simply stated, the U.S. Senate would not confirm him for any job.
The FBI agent in charge of compiling the 'file' on Armitage said at the time, "The Armitage file is the thickest file ever for any nominee for any position."
Now, 12 years later, the new Bush administration is again trying to ram Armitage through the confirmation process. Powell wants him because "Rich Armitage is my best friend in the world."
To his credit, Defense Secretary Rumsfeld wanted no part of Armitage and rejected him for a high-ranking post at Defense. So Powell is trying to get him confirmed to serve in a key position – deputy secretary of state – which runs the State Department bureaucracy worldwide.
The same concerns that prevented Armitage from serving before still exist today.
For example, back in 1986 the President's Commission on Organized Crime Armitage's name surfaced when it investigated an Arlington, Va., gambling ring run by a friend of his. She was Nguyet Thi O'Rourke, a Vietnamese woman who did business with Raj Kumar Bansal.
Armitage was never charged for any crime as a result of the President's Commission, or by any other government agency.
This notorious international gambler and loan shark was, according to columnist Jack Anderson on March 13, 1986, tied to organized crime figures "Michael A. Larusso, also known as Mario A Scarfoni; James Corbitt Ballard; Roger Simkins Jr.; Herbie Cole and Richard A. McCaleb, all known and convicted gambling and organized crime figures."
According to a report filed with the Arlington court law enforcement officials said, "Bansal was the person who was over the Nguyet Thi O'Rourke gambling operation."
During the investigation, O'Rourke and a friend were arrested leaving a high-stakes gambling operation in Silver Spring, Md. O'Rourke’s friend allegedly fired a machine gun during a dispute.
Armitage drew attention to himself by writing a letter of support to the Arlington court on behalf of Mrs. O'Rourke on his official Pentagon stationery as an assistant secretary of defense for International Security Affairs!
He claimed, according to Anderson, that O'Rourke was "a successful businesswoman with a reputation for fairness and honesty. ..."
Clearly Armitage was trying to use his position to influence a local court in an ongoing criminal investigation.
Sound familiar?
After eight years of the Clintons' sleaze, lies and proximity to shady underworld figures, do we need yet another scandal in the so-far pristine Bush administration?
Do we need a man like Armitage in a high-ranking State Department position?
No. We do not.
If you agree that it is our duty to yet again stop a figure like Armitage from holding a key position, then here are three people you can contact to provide your views or other information on Armitage:
Here is the name and information of the FBI agent in charge of this new background check of Armitage. Call him, fax him – let him know your objection to Armitage.
If you have any information about Armitage, give it to this agent:

Also, please call or fax or contact the two key staffers on the U.S. Senate Committee on Foreign Relations, listed below. The Senate must confirm Armitage in order for him to assume this high-ranking position. If enough senators hear negative things about Armitage, they will not want to vote for him.
