Ronald Reagan has surged ahead of John F. Kennedy and Abraham Lincoln to lead in "America's Greatest Presidents" annual poll.
As reported by the Associated Press:
By last year's Gallup Poll, it was Reagan slightly behind Franklin D. Roosevelt, who in turn was slightly behind Kennedy and then Lincoln, who was No. 1.
In the current poll of 529 adults taken Feb. 9-11, Reagan was mentioned by 18 percent, Kennedy by 16 percent and Lincoln by 14 percent.
Those three were followed by – all grouped together – Jimmy Carter, Bill Clinton, FDR, Harry S Truman and George Washington.
Others mentioned were George H.W. Bush (father of the current president), Dwight D. Eisenhower, Richard M. Nixon and Theodore Roosevelt.
Gallup's poll data was released for Presidents Day, which is celebrated Monday.
Originally, the holiday was celebrated Feb. 22, the birthday of George Washington, the nation's first president.
But in 1968, Congress made the holiday part of a three-day weekend, setting the day marking the first president's birthday as the third Monday in February.
In 1971, Nixon issued a proclamation declaring the holiday Presidents Day so as to honor also Lincoln, who was born Feb. 12.
