Livid Prosecutor Eyes Rich Pardon

Furious at being ignored by President Clinton when he pardoned billionaire fugitive Marc Rich, the United States attorney in Manhattan is considering a criminal investigation.
This time the woman scorned by the ex-president is federal prosecutor Mary Jo White, whose office for the southern district of New York was the one that indicted Rich on tax-fraud and other charges in 1983. It was unable to prosecute him, because he fled the country to avoid trial.
According to Newsweek's issue of Feb. 19:
White is so outraged that Clinton studiously avoided consulting her about a pardon for a case arising on her turf that she is likely to go digging into how, and why, the pardon came to be granted.
The tough-as-nails prosecutor has indicated she may spread open the bank records of Rich's ex-wife, Denise Rich, to determine whether she illegally funneled money from him in Switzerland to Clinton.
The millionaire songwriter who contributed heavily to the Democratic National Committee and to Clinton's library fund, as well as gave expensive gifts to him and the former first lady, now New York's junior senator, has taken the Fifth Amendment right not to testify against herself at a congressional hearing.
If White pursues the campaign-contributions paper trail, it could mean Denise Rich is facing investigations on three fronts – in New York by a federal prosecutor and in Washington by committees of both the Senate and House of Representatives.
