Ashcroft Warns of Possible U.S. Attack Within a Week

Attorney General John Ashcroft on Monday said credible evidence indicated there could be additional terrorist attacks on the United States within the next week.

Ashcroft said there was no specific information on the type of attack to expect, but law enforcement agencies have been told to be on the highest alert.

"The administration has concluded based on information developed that there may be additional terrorist attacks within the United States and against United States interests over the next week. The administration views this information as credible, but unfortunately, it does not contain specific information as to the type of attack or specific targets," he said.

FBI Director Robert Mueller said notifying law enforcement even though they had no specifics was the right thing to do.

"On every occasion when the government has received credible information, we have chosen to warn our colleagues in the law enforcement community. And we are doing so again today, even though it is not specific as to the intended target or as to the intended method," Mueller said.

He addressed the International Association of the Chiefs of Police and knows how difficult it is to respond to an unspecified threat, Mueller said. But with the authorities and the community on high alert, we may be more successful at thwarting a possible terrorist attack, he said.
