WASHINGTON – Standing in the mass of pro-lifers, most of them conservatives and Republicans, one Democrat who voiced his support for George W. Bush in the 2000 election said Monday's March for Life represented an optimistic future in America.
"Looking over the crowd and seeing all the young people is very reassuring about America's youth," said Ray Flynn, former mayor of Boston.
Flynn, who served as U.S. ambassador to the Vatican from 1993 to 1997, said Monday's demonstration reminded him of a conversation with John Paul II in 1993 at World Youth Day in Denver.
"The Holy Father told me, 'I've seen the face of young America, and the future of America is promising,' " Flynn said. "John Paul is right, and the future is promising."
Flynn was one of the prominent Democrats who broke ranks with his party to publicly support Bush.
"I made my statement because it is more important to be a good Catholic and a good American than to be a good Democrat," he said. "President Bush needs to send a clear message of his commitment to pro-life causes and his commitment to supporting legislation that protects the unborn."
Flynn said that Bush could use his influence on Capitol Hill to move the pro-life agenda.
"He can also get some of the weak-kneed politicians to vote the right way, instead of where the liberal media tells them to vote."
