Democratic National Committee Chairman Ed Rendell tonight said Al Gore should concede.
But Gore will not immediately concede, a senior Gore aide told Reuters news service.
Democrat party national chairman Joe Andrew said: "The Democratic Party does not think Al Gore needs to concede. This is his decision to make. We stand united behind him." Gore's camp said he would make an announcement Wednesday.
Gore "should act now and concede," Rendell earlier told MSNBC. Rendell has been a firm Gore supporter but apparently believes tonight's Supreme Court decision dooms Gore's efforts to continue contesting the presidential election.
Gore attorney Laurence Tribe, a Harvard law professor, appeared on CNN and also called on Gore to give up.
Rep. Robert Wexler, D-Fla., one of Gore's most strident supporters, told Fox News, "I guess at this point there's nothing else to do."
Appearing near tears, he attacked the Supreme Court's ruling and said, "I just don't understand how this could happen in America." But he referred for the first time to "President-elect Bush" and said, "I'm sure Al Gore will do the right thing" and concede.
