Gore campaign volunteers were caught doling out cigarettes to homeless people being recruited for their votes, WISN-TV reported Sunday in Milwaukee.
A Milwaukee Rescue Mission employee found the Gore workers "trying to bribe" people with cigarettes and ordered them off the property, the station reported.
"Well, we're pretty busy, going to the local shelters," one volunteer shipped in from New York told WISN-TV.
Republican state Rep. Scott Walker said, "Why would the Gore campaign be giving anything out other than a ride to go and vote?"
The revelation had the Gore campaign red-faced. "This kind of activity described by Channel 12 is not the kind of help we asked for, and it's the kind of help we flat-out reject," said a spokesman for Gore, who claims to be anti-tobacco.
"They have left the state, and we will not invite them to return."
