All Bets Are Off – It's Time to Fight!
Dan Frisa
Wednesday, Nov. 22, 2000
All bets are off.

The arrogant ruling of the Florida Supreme Court, anticipated here yesterday in Kangaroo Court Set to Jump for Gore?, set a new low for this ridiculous process instigated by Al Gore in his brazen attempt to take this election at all costs.

That the high court injected itself as a willing partner in the Gore effort, by unjustifiably changing Florida law in a clear attempt to shift the election’s result from Bush to Gore, is a travesty plain and simple

Where do we go from here?

Aside from taking to the streets – an option apparently favored by a growing segment of the public – bold action must be taken, and fast!

As outlined in the above-referenced column, there are still some powerful cards yet to be played:

• The secretary of state can still certify the results now, as clearly required by Florida law, the ruling of the court notwithstanding. As an independently elected executive officeholder – on a coequal basis with the judiciary – she certainly would be justified to do so given the blatant and obvious overreaching by the state Supreme Court. Contact the Florida Secretary of State!

• The 11th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals has invited further motions in the action previously brought by plaintiffs regarding the conduct of the Florida election. Given the court’s ruling, both equal protection and due process claims are now ripe for federal adjudication. A recent Alabama case is on point and is compelling precedent for such action. Just this afternoon, this court has agreed to now hear the Bush appeal on constitutional grounds!

• The Florida Legislature retains the constitutional prerogative to select its state’s presidential electors. It can still act to fulfill this responsibility, especially given the tainted process exhibited so dramatically by numerous instances of highly questionable practices. Early this evening the Speaker of the Florida House of Reps announced that the legislature could very well take action in light of the blatant disregard for the law in the ruling by the Supreme Court. Contact the Florida Legislature!

Further, on a broader basis, it is imperative that this charade of a process be called precisely what it is: A FRAUD.

There is no pretty way to say it, because it is not a pretty sight.

Damn the talking heads and the Gore media apologists who attempt to condemn such truthful characterizations!

It is what it is.

This whole mess is an outrage.

It is a disgrace.

And it perverts our entire system of government by raising serious doubts about the very efficacy of the right of self-determination, as expressed by the simple, but fundamentally important, casting of votes.

When faith in the system is so gravely breached, chaos is sure to follow.

Questions abound.

People don’t know where to turn.

Given the palpable vacuum and the resultant uncertainty now felt by so many, this opportunity must be seized upon to show the way.

It is now time to gird for a fight, both legal and political.

We need tough and bold leadership from Governor Bush. He must step up and call the shots and inspire people to follow his lead. Contact Bush For President!

The time for "allowing the process to play out" is long past.

If you can, go to Florida right now and join people there in standing up for what is right. Palm Beach or Broward are the targets now, as Miami-Dade today, in a stunning blow to the Gore campaign, responded to the people by suspending all hand counts.

At the very least, contact the Florida secretary of state, the Florida Legislature, and Governor Bush, on the links above, and express your support and outrage.

The time for action is now.
